Mattresses are the most-refused item in residential waste collection, and the most common reason someone calls a hauler for a single object. They cannot be compacted, they take a per-item disposal fee, and a box spring will not bend around a stair turn no matter how convinced you are.
Say so when you call. It changes how the mattress has to be wrapped and transported, and a hauler who finds out at the door may not be equipped to take it that day. Nobody is going to be weird about it — it just needs to be planned for.
A mattress on a Memphis curb becomes a neighborhood fixture. Have it taken out of the bedroom instead, which is the part you were dreading anyway.

Tell us what needs to go and roughly how much of it. Load size is the whole basis of the quote, so that one answer settles most of it.
